Job Description

Overview

Under general direction, performs skilled electrical, instrumentation, and control-system work to support the safe and reliable operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and related infrastructure. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and replaces energized equipment and circuits, including conduit systems, feeders, branch circuits, panel boards, transformers, disconnects, variable frequency drives, backup generators, SCADA components, and related electrical systems in accordance with applicable national, state, and local electrical codes. Evaluates electrical systems, identifies maintenance needs, and recommends equipment upgrades, repairs, and modifications. Coordinates with electrical and mechanical contractors on new equipment installations and facility improvements. Supports planning, modification, design, installation, and calibration of instrumentation, SCADA control systems, and electrical systems; maintains spare parts inventory; and provides guidance and training to staff on the operation and maintenance of electrical and electronic instrumentation equipment.

Duties

Oversee and troubleshoot and repair 110 and 480-voltage alternating current equipment.
Obtain measurements and readings using electrical and mechanical testing instruments, including digital multi-meters, meggers, amp meters, ohm meters, and phase rotation meters.
Oversee and perform a variety of other maintenance tasks, such as electrical preventative maintenance, lock-out/tag-out, disconnecting and removing motors, and responding to emergencies.
Coordinate maintenance work with other sections, contractors and engineers; estimate time, materials and equipment required for repairs; examine various electrical systems and make recommendations for new equipment, repairs and modifications.
Maintain records of maintenance and repair work; prepare reports, documentation, and correspondence.
Oversee and perform pipe bending and installation of electrical conduit, equipment, feeders, branch circuits, motors and lighting.
Draw and read electrical, instrumentation, process and instrumentation diagrams, and mechanical schematics, blueprints and/or diagrams.
Install, maintain, test, and repair plant lighting and electrical equipment.
Tests and maintain electric motors, variable frequency drives, alarms, and control systems to ensure proper working condition.
Inspect electrical installations to determine maintenance requirements and procedures.
Assist staff with information regarding electrical systems within the plan and off-site locations.
Participate in an electrical safety program.
Perform annual maintenance of motor control centers.
Responds to alarms and take corrective actions.
Responsible for use, care, upkeep and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles used.
Performs general clean-up activities.
Makes adjustments/repairs as required.
Respond to emergency call-outs on nights, weekends and holidays.
Performs other duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications

Requires high school diploma and specialized training in electrical trades.
Three years of experience as a journey-level electrician, including repair of electrical systems and equipment.
Experience in electrical maintenance and repair or wastewater treatment plan equipment or other related commercial equipment.
Tennessee drivers’ license.
Knowledgeable of the fundamentals of electricity and electronics as related to the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, electronic solid state devices, circuits, wiring, and found in water and wastewater industry.
Knowledge of applicable safety procedures for working on, or in proximity to, open energized conductors and equipment, including CPR, first aid, and pertinent provisions of the Tennessee Electrical Code.
Knowledge of the Tennessee Electrical Code, National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code.
Knowledge of tools and protective equipment and their use on, or in proximity to, energized conductors and equipment up to 480 volts.
Knowledgeable of lock-out/tag-out procedures and Arc Flash Hazard procedures and NFPA 70E codes and regulations for electrical safety in the work place.
Knowledgeable of wire pulling techniques and of the layout and installation of electrical equipment, panels and devices and the ability to pull wire from manual to mechanical
Ability to obtain measurements and readings using electrical and mechanical testing instruments.
Ability to perform a variety of maintenance tasks, including preventative maintenance, lock-out/tag-out and disconnecting and removing motors.
Ability to prepare time, work, and material reports and estimate time and materials required for electrical installations and maintenance.
Ability to analyze problems and develop effective solutions.
Ability to read, utilize, comprehend, and apply the National Electrical Code, the Tennessee Electrical Code and other applicable procedures to electrical installations both on and offsite.
Ability to operate a computer and related software; ability to read, interpret, and draw mechanical and electrical schematics.
Ability to work effectively alone and unassisted or as a member of a crew.

Work Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a water pump station; wastewater treatment plant environment.
Work may also be performed in a field environment which could vary in weather and outside conditions.
Some travel required from site to site. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, oil, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, toxic chemicals, gases and related conditions.
May be exposed to hazardous traffic conditions.
Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces and through rough terrain.
May be required to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
